Services we Provide

Marriage Counseling and Couple Therapy

Marriage counseling or couple therapy is a specific therapueutic approach designed to help couples resolve distress so often caused by relational difficulties. Because intimate relationships are important to people it is painful when those relationships aren't working well. Many couples find themselves getting stuck in repeating patterns of negative interactions, having the same arguments over and over. These negative interactions invariably leave one or both of the partners feeling disconnected, hurt, lonely, and even depressed and anxious. Sometimes the distress is so great couples will talk about ending their relationship.

Here at the MN Couple Therapy Center we specialize in couple therapy, we often see more couples in a week than many therapists see in a month.  We use an approach called Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples, an aproach developed by Drs. Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg in the early 1980's.  Research on this approach has shown that EFT helped 90% of couples improve, and 70-73% of couples go from dissatisfied in their relationship to satisfied. It also showed that these changes were lasting after therapy had ended. EFT  is called an "experiential" model because the therapist helps the couple connect in new, meaningful ways within the therapy session. When a couple can get reconnected - where each feels like they really matter to the other person - then they can feel healthier as individuals and as a couple, and can work together to solve issues. Low Cost Counseling

One of our values is to provide services to the broadest range of clients and to provide training opportunities to therapists learning couple therapy.  To this end we provide a low cost ($15-30/hour) counseling option provided by Jay Lampert, a Masters level Marriage and Family Therapy Intern who has completed the coursework and it now getting clinical experience.  In addition, Alivia Ebacher MA, our "Post Graduate Fellow" with a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy who is building her clinical skills toward full licensure provides therapy and uses a sliding scale fee that starts at $50/hour.  Both the Intern and Post Graduate Fellow have completed their regular course work, have taken additional training in couple therapy, and provide individual or couple therapy under close supervision.  If this is of interest to you please let us know at This email address is being protected from spambots. Premarital Counseling

Several of our therapists are trained in helping couples prepare for one of the most important relationships one can experience: marriage.  Research has shown that premarital counseling can help decrease the divorce rate by helping couples build on their strengths and identify areas that need to be addressed before they become too damaging.  These therapists are trained in using the Prepare/Enrich inventory, a well researched tool to identify strengths in a relationship and areas of needing growth. Discernment Counseling

Sometimes couples will find themselves in a place where they aren't sure if they should try to save their relationship or bring it to an end.  Rather than try to work on their relationship where one or both aren't sure it should be saved and becoming frustrated it can be more helpful to spend a 1-5 sessions with a therapist trained in discernment counseling to clarify what can be done. This service is a time limited approach simply focused on identifying which options a couple has for their relationship.  For more information or to set up an appointment contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Our therapists are trained in how to work with individuals who want to address relational issues in a way that respects both partners in the relationship. We will help the individual we are working with find ways to address the problems confronting him or her.  For more information or to set up an appointment contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots.
